Oil vs diesel Brent slipped under $100 and WTI near $90 on pipeline-restart talk plus UN contacts — longest losing streak in over a year. That is not cheap fuel. Diesel and refined product are still the bind. Crude workarounds came back faster than the stuff you actually burn. Hormuz + East–West About day 206. War-risk is still extreme. Ships and fertilizer will not move because a podium said so. Watch the waterways, not the applause. Moscow Ukraine launched a very large drone-and-missile package into the Moscow region on the last day of Russia’s Duma vote. Russian officials reported deaths, a damaged Moscow oil refinery, and hundreds of drones intercepted on the approach. That is energy infrastructure again — the same class of target that later shows up in diesel and freight, not the same afternoon. New Zealand / humanitarian calls Wellington has been putting money and technical help toward disaster response (Nepal floods and other Red Cross appeals). That is the “call for help” lane: climate-driven floods, missing people, slow search. It is not a Hollywood event. Monday special — not the usual sitrep list. Four things are running at the same time. None of them is a movie ending. Together they can make next year’s planting season expensive and thin. 1. Fuel Diesel is how food moves and how fields get worked. High fuel for months is not a gas-station rant. It is a cost baked into every acre. 2. Fertilizer and shortages A lot of nitrogen and other inputs still ride Gulf and Red Sea routes. When those doors stay tight, farmers cut rates or skip acres. That shows up in 2027, not in tomorrow’s headline. 3. Debt and strained major economies When governments and households are already stretched, nobody has spare cash to absorb a second year of expensive inputs. Credit gets picky. That is how a supply problem becomes an affordability problem. 4. A strong El Niño on the board Weather is the multiplier. If the pattern hits key grain belts the wrong way while fuel and fertilizer are already tight, you do not get a dramatic collapse. You get thinner yields and higher prices for longer.
