Rates of 15%, 25%, and 50% now cover a large list of American products — steel and aluminum, appliances, dairy, furniture, apparel, pulp and paper, electronics. Ottawa framed it as dollar-for-dollar after U.S. tariffs on Canadian goods. Talks had already stalled. For shoppers and businesses, that means higher prices on some imported goods and more pressure on already-tight budgets. Oil: Brent pushed toward the $100 mark after attacks disrupted Saudi energy sites and Middle East risk stayed elevated. WTI is running in the low-to-mid $90s. You do not need a $100 print on every screen for diesel, groceries, and shipping to keep moving higher. The lag from tankers and refined products still matters. Russia resumed strikes on Ukraine, including Kyiv, hours after another round of U.S. diplomacy. Confirmed reporting put at least two dead and more injured. Energy infrastructure remains a target in that war, which feeds the same fuel and fertilizer story. Practical takeaway: do not panic-buy. Higher long-term rates raise the cost of mortgages, cars, and credit. The mix this week is fiscal debt, inflation still tied to energy, and a wave of corporate borrowing for AI infrastructure competing with Treasuries. AI investment: JPMorgan strategists have compared parts of the current AI trade to late-1999 conditions — not “AI is fake,” but that the market is crowded and the financing is getting more expensive. Hyperscalers have issued a very large amount of debt this year. That can work. It can also squeeze everyone else’s borrowing costs. OpenAI: two senior leaders left in August — former COO Brad Lightcap and CRO Denise Dresser — on top of a longer list of 2026 exits. Leadership turnover at the most visible AI company is a signal to watch concentration, not a reason to panic. Mitigation is boring on purpose: emergency cash, cut high-interest debt, don’t leverage one theme, stock what you actually eat, stay employable and healthy. You control the household.
